One of the big stories over Christmas was the problem of migrants trying to illegally enter the U.K. in small boats across the Channel. As Parliament returned, I offered the Home Secretary my complete support for the presumption that people who have travelled to the U.K. through another safe country - in this case, France - should have claimed asylum in that first safe country and should be returned there.
If we fail to act robustly, we risk fuelling people trafficking and the only people who benefit from that are organised criminals. I find it unbelievable how the Labour Shadow Home Secretary, Diane Abbott, has criticised Sajid Javid for designating this a major incident. This is a situation that needs to be nipped in the bud very swiftly and decisively.
