I’ve warmly welcomed Boris Johnson’s announcement of a major increase in school funding. Next year the education budget will rise by £2.6 billion and the year after that it will go up by a further £4.8 billion.
I know from my termly headteacher forums how hard our heads work to make their budgets go further, and this announcement is really important news. The independent Institute for Fiscal Studies says it will restore funding to the levels seen before the spending restraint caused by the financial crisis.
The extra money will include £700m for special needs pupils and will ensure a minimum level of funding per pupil of £4000 at primary school and £5000 at secondary school. It’s the best possible news for our children’s education!
